Fine calculator: what does an EmpCo violation cost?
Estimate in 45 seconds what vague green claims could cost you under the EU Empowering Consumers Directive (2024/825) — in fines, warning letters, and emergency fixes.
Estimates only — not legal advice. Actual fines depend on the member state, your turnover there, cooperation with authorities, and the severity of the violation. The 4% framework comes from the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive enforcement regime that EmpCo strengthens.
How this is calculated
How high can EmpCo fines get?
The Unfair Commercial Practices Directive regime that EmpCo strengthens provides for fines of at least 4% of annual turnover for widespread cross-border infringements (or at least €2 million where turnover data is unavailable). National implementations can exceed this.
Who can send a cease-and-desist letter in Germany?
Competitors, consumer-protection organisations (e.g. Verbraucherzentrale), the Wettbewerbszentrale, industry associations and the Deutsche Umwelthilfe. Warning letters cost you legal fees and force you to stop the claim immediately.
What is an emergency compliance audit?
After a warning, companies typically commission an external review of all marketing claims — often €8,000–€25,000 for a mid-sized brand, on short notice, under time pressure.
When does EmpCo apply?
The directive (EU) 2024/825 applies since 27 September 2026, including to packaging and materials already on the market. Member states must treat violations as unfair commercial practices from that date.
